Science Olympiad

VIRGINIA SCIENCE OLYMPIAD

Science Olympiad is a national science tournament with multiple levels of competition: invitational, regional, state, and national. Students compete in events pertaining to various scientific disciplines, including earth science, biology, chemistry, physics, and engineering. Unlike many other science enrichment opportunities, Science Olympiad provides a team experience, allows for a great deal of creativity, and exposes students to a wide variety of topics. Colvin Run students may compete in EITHER Division A or Division B.

Division A is open to students from grades 3-5 and is a great introduction to Science Olympiad. This is an opportunity for students to have fun and learn and does not advance past the regional level.

Division A: Grades 3-5

Division B is open to students from grades 5-8 and is much more competitive and challenging. Students can advance beyond the regional level. Contact Academic Teams leads with Division B questions.

Please see the Div B website for the events - https://www.virginiaso.org/events-bc

Please visit the Virginia Science Olympiad website for additional details about the program: https://www.virginiaso.org https://www.virginiaso.org/div-bc

Lego League

FIRST LEGO LEAGUE

This building and research-based program is designed to capture the inherent curiosity of children in grades K-3 and teach them valuable employment and life skills. The junior program provides an introduction to basic science and engineering concepts. The grade 4-6 robotics program applies these concepts.

Note: this activity can be set up directly by parents without a school coordinator. Please visit the website below for information.

ODYSSEY OF THE MIND

This international educational program provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions to competition on the local, state, and world level.

The Academic Teams Committee is looking for Co-Leads for Odyssey of the Mind for this school year.

MATH OLYMPIAD

Math Olympiad is a Parent Volunteer Sponsored Activity. MOEMS provides monthly problem-solving contests for elementary and middle school students. CRES grades 4 and 5 will compete in the Elementary division and grade 6 will compete in the Middle School division. It is organized by teams with 1-2 parent coaches working each group of students on a weekly basis on zoom or in person on a day and time that the coach will offer. After you register, you will be contacted by a volunteer coach who will offer you days and times for meetings.

There will be five monthly contests (5 questions each) administered each month from November through March. Awards will be announced and distributed after all five rounds. Tests are usually held monthly at 8am on a designated day at the school.

PTO membership and a fee is required to join. Coaches are unpaid parent volunteers. Please consider serving as a coach or assistant coach. Contact Xiang Yin at xiangyin@gmail.com if you are interested in teaching.

You can register your child here.
