We teach the rules to beginners and strategy to advanced players. Mr. Albert Anderson, of the non-profit U.S. Chess Center, will be our lead teacher. Our philosophy places a low priority on winning. Instead, the club will focus on improving one's skills. Good sportsmanship is the key to having fun.

Players are grouped by ability, not age. Chess teaches responsibility, discipline,critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Chess players learn how to make themost of their opportunities and how to turn a bad situation to their advantage.They learn not to make excuses for their setbacks, and to win and losegraciously. Club members are provided opportunities to represent Colvin Run in local, state, and national competitions.

Chess Club meets nearly every Tuesday after school in the cafeteria for 75minutes (until 5:30pm). Chess Club will not be held on any days the school isclosed or there is early release.

6th Grade Competes in Division M
 
CRES grades 4 and 5 will compete in the Elementary division and grade 6 will compete in the Middle School division. We will organize the students into groups, with 1-2 parent coaches working with each group of students on a weekly basis on zoom or in person, on a day and time that the coach will offer. After you register, you will be contacted by a volunteer coach who will offer you days and times for meetings.

There will be five monthly contests (5 questions each) administered each month from November through March. Awards will be announced and distributed after all five rounds. Tests are usually held monthly at 8am on a designated day at the school. 

PTO membership and a fee is required to join. Coaches are unpaid parent volunteers.
