TEACHER WORKDAY Class Descriptions

Adrenaline Dance Camp

One of the area’s most popular dance studios is bringing their staff to Colvin Run! Adrenaline’s goal is to provide students with experiences that develop dance technique, self-esteem, confidence, a healthy competitive spirit and creativity.  They will provide one highly trained instructor for every 10 students, grouped by age, to teach the latest trends and techniques in at least one genre of dance: Jazz, Hip Hop, Ballet, Lyrical, Contemporary, Tap, Break Dancing and Pom.  Adrenaline will customize this camp based on the ages and interests of those enrolled.  Boys and girls encouraged!

Art with Ms. Katerina - Watercolors (Sept-Dec) or Acrylics (Jan-Apr)

During this 3-hour class, students will be introduced to painting techniques and applications, while creating original work(s) of art based upon the chosen theme.  Students will have an opportunity to gain or improve upon their skills in a small group (maximum 10 kids) and enhance their appreciation for various elements of art and the art world (e.g. color, texture, perspective, etc.).  Students will move at their own pace, however, everyone will aim for at least one finished painting.  Kids who move faster will work on another project.  This class is designed for children who love to paint and can do this for 3 hours in a row!

Middle School Prep

In March, our 6th graders will already be thinking about Middle School.  This class is designed to help with the developmental and social transitions ahead.  This skills-based program will prepare students with productive and healthy ways to navigate the wide range of common dilemmas in middle school: the challenges of social media, an awareness of how their teenage brain will change, how mindfulness and a growth mindset can shape success, and other critical life topics. Students will come away with more developed coping strategies, an increased awareness of themselves, and a readiness to tackle the transition ahead.

Mini Manners Camp with Ms. B.

Ms. B.’s camp activities include arts & crafts, games, treasure hunts, movement and healthy snacks, all while incorporating the importance of everyday manners! Broaden your child’s experiences by giving them the gift of culture and a healthy dose of all-day etiquette lessons while having FUN.  Ms. B. takes great pride in honing good manners, proper etiquette and social graces so that your child can shine.

OverTime Athletics (OTA): Sports Variety Camp, Flag Football, Basketball and Kickball Round Robins

Games, games and more games!  OTA has a long record with CRES and knows just what our kids enjoy.  During most Teacher workdays, OTA will offer a variety athletic program that features different sports throughout the session. Participants will practice skills and play games in both traditional sports and playground favorites.  The OTA Sports Variety Camp may feature the best “to-do” list ever – Basketball, Soccer, Flag Football, Kickball, Capture the Flag, Wiffle Ball, Bump and Bite, Knights and Dragons, Numbers Game, Tag Games, Safe Base and MORE!  OTA will also offer specific sports and/or round robin tournament style play.  No prior experience is necessary as the emphasis is always on sportsmanship and fun.

Pottery

Jimmy Potters Workshop is an exciting and unique ceramic after school program designed to provide children with the experience of an actual professional pottery studio in their school setting.  Students will create beautiful projects inspired by cultures around the world.  Jimmy Potters’ mission is to tap into a child’s potential by encouraging their creativity and to artistically reinforce S.T.E.A.M. based principles.  No prior ceramics or clay experience is required.  More challenging work will be assigned to students with previous experience.

Safe Kids 101

How do you know when your pre-teen or teen is ready to stay home alone?  This class is designed to help kids feel more “in charge” and capable when at home, with or without parents.  Topics Include: responsibilities when staying home alone, simple first aid (cuts, burns, abdominal thrusts, and more), understanding safety in unfamiliar scenarios (unexpected visitors, fire, aggressive dogs), how to avoid dangerous situations, and digital safety and responsibility.  Trained EMTs from our local Wolftrap Station 42 Fire Department will visit to deliver the basic CPR, first aid and fire safety portion of the lessons.  In this class, your child will learn important safety principles that will teach them best safety practices in the home and in the community.
