Debate – Competitive Prep Debate            

Wednesdays 4:15-5:15pm

Instructor:  J.W. Strassberg | $75 for 4 sessions

Back by popular demand!  This spring, there will be a small group (max 6 students) advanced debate program, open to 5th and 6th grade students with some debate experience.  This class will tackle advanced issues in science and technology.   It will be led by a former CRES and current TJ High School debate student.  Students will review and develop successful debate tactics, public speaking techniques, argument construction, speechwriting, rebuttals, and back-and-forth questioning.  NOTE: Some time may be required outside of class to research and practice speeches to ensure quality and success under time limitation rules.  

 

Location:  Online via Zoom Video Conferencing 

Grades:  5-6

Magic - Green Wand Course            

Thursdays 4:15-5:15pm

Instructor: The Ultimate Magic Academy | $175 for 8 sessions (materials included)

Magician Joe Romano and his talented team of wizards return to Colvin Run with the Green Wand Magic Class!  This class is for previous and new students. Learn how to cut a lady in half, give your friends super hero powers and make invisible objects appear in a magic pencil pouch.  Students will learn the 8 basic effects that make up all magic tricks. Each lesson comes with a custom magic prop, a top-secret file folder and a secret word to unlock bonus videos in the online video vault.  This program builds self-confidence and develops critical communication skills in a fun and unique way.

Minecraft Modding                   

Wednesdays 4:15-5:15pm 

Instructor: STEM exCEL | $130 for 7 sessions

Minecraft Modding teaches students important problem-solving and design skills by making changes to the popular game itself.  Programming fundamentals will be reinforced by designing and implementing large-scale Minecraft modifications. The instructors offer individualized attention and mentorship throughout the course, so students will learn at their pace following their personal learning style and interests.  Students will end the class with their mods, which they may add to their personal Minecraft games.

Speech Club

CRES Instructors: Fairfax Collegiate | $160 for 8 sessions

Discover the secrets to public speaking!  Students will deliver written, extemporaneous, and impromptu speeches.  The instructor will critique voice inflection, eye contact, body language, gestures, word choice, visual aids, and tone.  Coursework will feature daily speech exercises. Students will research, write, and rehearse individual speeches by the end of the session.  All levels of experience are welcome to join.

Art - Directed Drawing               * Online Option Being Considered *

CRES Instructor: Ms. Reed | $125 for 7 sessions (materials included)  

Have you ever wanted to draw something but thought “I can’t draw that!”  Well, never fear, because directed drawing is here! Directed drawing is a fun and unique way to gain confidence in your drawing skills by following step-by-step directions that can make you feel successful.  After each drawing is completed, artists will be given a choice, such as watercolor paints, oil pastels, colored pencils, or markers, as to how they will fill their picture with color.

Art with Ms. Pugh - Name Game/Spring Fling        * REVISED - Now Grades K-3 *

Thursdays 4:15-5:15pm

CRES Instructor: Ms. Pugh | $125 for 6 sessions (materials included)  

Join Ms. Pugh (former CRES Art Teacher) in exploring the creative wonders of your name using clay, straws, and tape, and bring some zing into your spring with paints, paper bags, and butterfly wings.  There will be six fun-tastic projects for our younger students using a mix of media and techniques to create unique paintings, sculptures, mosaics, and ceramics. Bring your imagination and “art smarts” to play the name game and join our spring fling!

Basketball           

Wednesdays 4:15-5:15pm 

CRES Instructors: Mr. Henry & Ms. Kurts | $95 for 6 sessions  

Students will participate in activities that will improve on basic basketball skills.  There will also be a focus on core rules that distinguish basketball from other sports.  Teamwork will be emphasized through scrimmage games each day. Each lesson will allow the children to work with different students as a means to improve cooperative teamwork while reinforcing why basketball is its own unique game.

Crocheting                  

Wednesdays 8:00-9:00am 

CRES Instructor: Ms. Matthews | $100 for 6 sessions (materials included)

Mix learning a lifelong skill with service learning!  Students will learn how to crochet a hat, scarf, blanket, or other project while also participating in a community donation of blankets.  The crocheted blankets will be donated to local families in need through our local emergency rescue offices. Students will learn basic crochet stitches, common motifs and patterns.

Design Squad and Design Squad Jr.

CRES Instructors: Ms. Allen & Ms. Blackwell | $115 for 6 sessions

Design Squad and Design Squad Jr. are back with six hands-on challenges!  This STEM inspired program sparks the inventive spirit of children to “Invent It, Build It.”  Students will think creatively about how inventions improve our lives and help build a better world.  Planned activities include creating a device to launch marshmallows into hot chocolate, building a structure to withstand an earthquake, inventing an adaptive device for the disabled to carry materials while using a wheelchair or crutches, and more!  Older students will work on more advanced structures/activities.

LEGO Building Club                       

Thursdays 4:15-5:15pm

CRES Instructor: Ms. White | $100 for 6 sessions (materials included)

Show your creativity as you build LEGO creations.  Each week will offer a different project theme, including Pressure Proof Structures (build a structure that will withstand the pressure of a weight), Amazing Mazes (create a maze that a marble can run through including turns, tunnels and dead ends), and Amusement Park Design (using what you know about simple machines, create the ultimate amusement park).  While having fun with LEGOS, students will find their inner designer, engineer or inventor. This is the ideal class for any LEGO-maniac!

Run Club          

Wednesdays 8:15-9:00am  

CRES Instructors: Ms. Bunch & Ms. Seiler | $150 for 8 sessions

Spring is time to get outdoors and in shape!  Come Wednesday mornings to train as part of the Colvin Runners.  Students will build endurance and confidence and will learn to push themselves further than they thought possible, while having fun with their friends.  The students will work towards a timed 5K by the end of the class. The Colvin Runners are always well represented in the CRES Fun Run. Coaches will also invite students and their families to run an official 5K at the end of the class, where the students can wear their well-earned Colvin Runners shirts as a team.  Please note 8:15am start time.

Tasty Tuesdays! Cooking Class

Tuesdays 4:15-5:15pm

CRES Instructor: Ms. McCulla | $135 for 6 sessions

Come learn how to make classic dishes in this six-week cooking class featuring a different breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner, or dessert each week.  Work with recipes, learn kitchen techniques, and try your hand at blending unique flavors. Menu items will include vanilla cream French toast, American meatball subs, Italian paninis, homemade apple crisp, southern drop biscuits, chocolate oatmeal cookies, and more.  Students will measure, mix, and prepare their own dishes to sample, so come hungry!

Theater for Young Readers                

Tuesdays 8:00-9:00am  

CRES Instructor: Ms. Reed | $120 for 6 sessions

Lights! Camera! Action!  This class provides a theater option for our youngest actors and actresses.  Students will focus on basic theater and acting techniques, design sets, create props, and produce costumes.  In this session, our actors and actresses will be playing roles from some of Mo Willems’ most beloved stories.  The 6-sessions will culminate in a short play for parents.

Yoga is a fantastic way for your child to unwind after a long school day!  In this hour-long yoga class, students will improve their flexibility, strength, and coordination and also will learn to promote balance and relaxation.  Please bring a yoga mat and a water bottle and come discover the magic of yoga.
