BASA Spring 2019 Class Descriptions


Art of Cartooning       

Thursdays 4:15-5:15pm

Instructor: Young Rembrandts | $145 for 8 sessions (materials included). 

Discover the fun of cartooning!  Students will learn to draw cartoon imagery, including action, irony and emotional expression of characters. They will follow stepwise instructions to create their own independent versions of the cartoon lessons, with animated characters in humorous settings. The curriculum is varied and challenging, with new, engaging cartooning lessons every session. The goal is to provide students with a fun introduction to cartooning techniques such as exaggeration, caricature and personification, to make playful art of their own.  Older/experienced students will have the opportunity to work on more advanced lessons.

Book Club – “The Page Turners”                        

Wednesdays (Grades 3-4) or Fridays (Grades 5-6) 8:00-9:00am

CRES Instructor: Ms. Mulry | $105 for 7 sessions.* 

Calling all Bookdragons!  CRES book club has a new mission, library ambassadors.  As a club, we will read, discuss, and review a selection of books and craft reviews of those books.   We will write and produce short videos to promote our favorite books and share those videos during CRES 411.  One session will be open to third and fourth graders, and one session will be available to fifth and sixth graders.  Come join the fun at morning BASA!

Coding – Video Game Maker                                                                                      

Wednesdays 4:15-5:15pm

Instructor: Coder Kids | $165 for 8 sessions.  

Students will create their own sprites, backgrounds, and power-ups for their games in Scratch.  They will learn to write code to create enemies in their games and variables to keep score.  All students will complete the course with a final project of their own design.  Advanced levels/modules are available for students who have completed this class before.

Grades K-2 (no coding experience necessary)

Coding – Website Design                                                                                         

Thursdays 8:00-9:00am

Instructor: Coder Kids | $165 for 8 sessions.  

Create your own website!  In this class, students will understand and be able to employ basic HTML5 markup tags and CSS3 stylesheets to build their own websites.  Students will be able to use JavaScript to add logic to their web pages and create basic web apps, like a calculator.  They will also be able to develop websites that look and function great on mobile devices by using Bootstrap, the responsive web design framework. New and returning coders are welcome.

Crafting Around the World  *NEW DAY/TIME*                                                                                           

Mondays 4:15-5:15pm  

CRES Instructors: Ms. Hoff & Ms. Bahamonde | $115 for 6 sessions (materials included).  

Get your creative passports ready!  Students will explore different cultures and countries through arts and crafts projects.  Examples of projects include creating a German clock, Japanese paper fan, and Australian rhythm sticks.  Each week focuses on a different country and art practice.  Let’s craft around the world!

Wednesdays 8:00-9:00am

CRES Instructor: Ms. Matthews | $100 for 6 sessions (materials included). 

Mix learning a lifelong skill with service learning!  Students will select a personal project of interest (scarf, blanket, etc.) while also participating in a community donation of blankets. Students will learn basic crochet stitches, common motifs and patterns as they plan their own creations.

Debate – Competitive Prep Debate                                                                        

Wednesdays 4:15-5:15pm

Instructor:  J.W. Strassberg  | $75 for 4 sessions. 

Back by popular demand!  This spring, there will be a small-group (max 6 students), advanced debate program, open to 5th and 6th grade students with some debate experience.  This class will tackle advanced issues in science and technology.   It will be led by a former CRES and current TJ High School debate student and his parent.  Students will develop public speaking, critical reasoning, argument construction, rebuttal, and evidence presentation skills.

Design Squad – NASA Engineering                                 

Wednesdays (DSG) or Thursdays (DS Jr.) 8:00-9:00am

CRES Instructors: Ms. Allen & Ms. Krogh (DS Jr.); Ms. Blackwell & Ms. Allen (DSG) | $115 for 6 sessions.

Design Squad Global and Design Squad Jr. are back with six NEW hands-on challenges!  Written in collaboration with NASA, this spring’s guide has six activities that will bring engineering and NASA's moon missions to life.  Students will “Invent It, Build It.”  Planned activities include designing an air-powered rocket, creating a platform that can safely cushion “astronauts” when they land, building a cardboard crane, creating a solar hot water heater, and more!

Grades K-2 (DS Jr. - Thursday AM); Grades 3-6 (DSG - Wednesday AM)

Fencing for Young Jedi                                                                                              

Fridays 4:15-5:15pm

Instructor: Fencers Club | $170 for 7 sessions. 

Classes are conducted in the discipline of epee. Students will focus on the fundamentals of fencing including footwork, handwork, strategy and rules of fencing. Classes will include group exercises as well as drills in pairs and bouting.  Age-appropriate games and activities build on conditioning, speed and endurance and also emphasize critical thinking and quick decision-making. At the end, a tournament will be held at Nova Fencing Club using electric fencing equipment.  All levels of experience welcome.

Flag Football                                                                                                          

Thursdays 4:15-5:15pm

CRES Instructor: Mr. Henry | $95 for 6 sessions. 

Join Mr. Henry after school to learn and practice the fundamentals of flag-football through age-appropriate skills and drills. Students will run, pass and score in this fun, no contact game.  Students will build performance and ability, as well as teaching sportsmanship values that extend far beyond the playing field.

My First Lemonade Stand                                                                                        

Tuesdays 8:00-9:00am

CRES Instructor: Ms. Allen & Spark Business Academy | $155 for 7 sessions. 

Let’s sell lemonade!  Join us for this fun class, where you will learn how to make yummy lemonade and how to earn money selling it!  The sessions will empower students with an entrepreneurial mindset for their lemonade stand.  Students will learn about marketing, finance and strategy in a supportive environment fostering team work.  From designing marketing flyers to estimating profits to experimenting with recipes, young students will have fun while engaging in enriching activities with a lasting developmental impact.  Students will work in teams and donate profits to a charity when they launch their lemonade stand in the spring!

Run Club                                                                                                            

Wednesdays 8:15-9:00am 

CRES Instructors: Ms. Bunch, Ms. Seiler, Ms. Abernathy | $150 for 8 sessions.  

Spring is time to get outdoors and in shape!  Come Wednesday mornings to train as part of the Colvin Runners. Students will build endurance and confidence, and will learn to push themselves further than they thought possible, while having fun with their friends.  The students will build towards a timed 5K by the end of the session. The Colvin Runners are always well represented in the CRES fun run.  Coaches will also invite students and their families to run an official 5K in May, where the students can wear their well-earned Colvin Runners shirts as a team. Please note 8:15am start time.

Speech Club                                                                                                        

Thursdays 4:15-5:15pm 

CRES Instructors: Fairfax Collegiate | $155 for 8 sessions.

Discover the secrets to public speaking!  In this class, students will write and deliver short speeches and presentations on topics of their own choosing in a comfortable setting. Instructors will provide detailed individual suggestions for improving both content and delivery.  Students will learn how to encourage each other and provide constructive feedback.  Students with any level of public speaking experience are welcome to join.

Tennis Jr.                                                                                                             

Tuesdays 4:15-5:15pm

Instructor: TopNotch Tennis | $135 for 8 sessions (equipment included).  

This popular program is geared towards beginners and introduces children to tennis by developing hand-eye coordination, agility, balance, movement, racquet control and sportsmanship.  Students will learn the fundamental strokes: forehand, backhand, volleys and serves, using drills and games in a fun, safe and friendly environment.

Yoga​​​​​​​  *NEW CLASS*

Wednesdays 4:15-5:15pm
CRES Instructor: Mr. Bittner | $95 for 6 sessions.  
Yoga is a fantastic way for your child to unwind after a long school day!  In this hour-long yoga class, students will improve their flexibility, strength, coordination, and also promote balance and relaxation. Please bring a yoga mat and a water bottle and come discover the magic of yoga.

Young Chefs                                                                                                         

Mondays 4:15-5:15pm

CRES Instructor: Ms. Javaid | $145 for 7 sessions. 

Sometimes the trick to getting your children to eat healthy is to teach them to cook by themselves!  Students will learn to fix healthy before/after school snacks while developing quantitative skills through recipe measurements.  We understand many children have food allergies so we will try our best to accommodate those requests.  Students will be exposed to many common international foods and drinks, including Mediterranean hummus with seasoned pita chips, Mexican quesadillas, Disney pineapple whip, and Indian mango lassi.  Each week, they will add a new recipe and shopping list to their personal cookbooks.
