Please review the information below, as the registration and team-organization processes are different for the two programs.

1. MATHCOUNTS 3–5 (MC345) Pilot Program

Colvin Run Elementary School has been invited to participate in the MATHCOUNTS 3–5 pilot program for students in Grades 3–5. Registration is now open for CRES students in Grades 3–5 who are interested in participating in the MATHCOUNTS 3–5 pilot program.

The program will include three pilot events during the 2026–2027 school year.

The first event is scheduled as follows:

  • Date: Saturday, November 7, 2026
  • Time:1:30–3:30 p.m.
    • Check-in begins at 1:30 p.m.
    • Competition begins at 2:00 p.m.
  • Location: Thoreau Middle School
2505 Cedar Lane, Vienna, VA 22180
  • Format: Teams of four students for each grade
  • Eligibility: CRES students in Grades 3–5

Two additional MC345 pilot events are planned for spring 2027, although the dates have not yet been announced. Our goal is to give each interested student an opportunity to participate in at least one of the three events.

One CRES teacher has also offered to host a practice session at CRES before or after school. Practice details will be shared after registration and team arrangements are confirmed.

Complete PTO registration HEREAND Complete the interest and availability form below by Friday October 23rd, 2026:

Please select the November 7 event only if your child can commit to attending. Team assignments and practice-session information will be communicated after registration closes.

2. MAMTS Team Battle 2026

MAMTS Team Battle is an in-person math competition featuring collaborative problem-solving, number sense, pattern recognition, deductive reasoning, and mathematical puzzles.

  • Date: Saturday, November 14, 2026
  • Time: Approximately 9:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m., including check-in and the award ceremony
  • Division E: Grades 3–5
  • Division M: Grades 6–8
  • Recommended team size: Four students
  • Team registration fee: $240 per team
  • Solo registration fee: $70 per student
  • General registration deadline: October 31, 2026
  • Late team-registration deadline: November 7, 2026
  • Competition information:MAMTS Team Battle 2026
  • Registration information: MAMTS registration page

Families have two registration options:

  1. Team registration: Parents may form and register a team. A full team normally consists of four students and must have an adult coach.
  2. Solo registration: A student who does not yet have a team may register as a solo registrant. MAMTS will try to place solo registrants onto teams on a best-efforts basis.

Please note that solo registration does not mean individual competition. All students will ultimately participate as members of teams. [mamts.org], [mamts.org]

Unlike MC345, MAMTS participation will not be registered, sponsored, or coordinated through the CRES PTO. Interested parents will independently organize teams, select an adult coach, complete registration, and arrange any team practices.

If your child is interested in MAMTS, please fill out this interest form https://forms.gle/H9tmi12oJedUP7W48, so we can help families connect, organize teams, and coordinate registration and practices directly. Families may also register through the MAMTS solo-registration option if they are unable to form a team.

Wait Until 8th Pledge

Please consider joining the Wait Until 8th Pledge, a parent-led initiative encouraging families to wait until at least the end of 8th grade before giving their children a smartphone—and to make that commitment together.

Many children today receive smartphones as early as 4th or 5th grade. While every family has different circumstances and needs, some families feel that waiting a little longer can give children more time to grow, play, develop face-to-face relationships, and build healthy technology habits without the added pressures and distractions that can come with smartphone use.

One of the most meaningful aspects of the Wait Until 8th initiative is its emphasis on community. The pledge becomes active when 10 or more families in the same grade at a school participate. This allows families to support one another and can help reduce the feeling that a child is being left out simply because their family has chosen to wait.

Families across the country have already joined the movement. We invite CRES families to learn more, consider whether the pledge is right for your family, and, if you choose, add your name.

Childhood is too short to waste on a smartphone.
